Want a frostbitten toe with that cocktail?

Welcome to Dawson City in the Yukon, Canada!  If you are like me, you may feel that your alcoholic beverages are missing something, maybe an olive, or you know, a human appendage.

Well, no need to look around anymore, the Downtown Hotel has the drink for you!

To join the sourtoe cocktail club, you ask to buy a drink with a frostbitten and/or amputated toe in it (the toes have actually been dehydrated and are preserved with salt).  But to make it official, you HAVE TO have the toe touch your lips.

There’s a fascinating history of each of the toes they use here.  My favorite has to be toe #1, which is as follows:

Lacking faith in doctors the brothers had no intention of traveling 60 miles to Dawson and paying one to do what they could just as easily accomplish on their own.The first step in the amputation was anaesthesia. Consuming large amounts of their 180% overproof rum, they soon felt that they were sufficiently drunk to continue with the amputation. Louie stuck out his frozen toe as Otto lifted the woodcutting axe. With one swing the toe was removed. As a reminder of the incident the brothers kept the toe, pickled in a jar of alcohol.

That toe was unfortunately swallowed by someone in the Sourtoe Club and is no longer available.

The website is great with stories from lecherously drunk men talking about their escapades so take a look through it.

Forget Mexico, I’m going to the Yukon for my next vacation!
